Surviving on a Deserted Island

So, we’ve heard the famous question “if you were stranded on a deserted Island, what things would you like to have?” and while most people would probably say that they want their cell phone, computer, etc. But here’s the thing, anything like that would not be worth it, simply because it probably wouldn’t work. When people say “oh I’d like to have my phone so I could call for help”, it kind of defeats the purpose of being on a deserted island. Now okay, you probably aren’t willingly or intentionally trying to be on a deserted island.

But let’s say you crashed from a boat and washed up on shore on an island that is completely deserted, what three things would you want to have with you to survive? A cell phone will not help you. A laptop will not keep you entertained. You don’t need to make-up for all the people you aren’t going to see. So, what things would you wanted to have to be able to survive for a short period of time, but also thrive in the chance that no one ever finds you?

  1. A blanket. I would most defiantly want to have a blanket that could keep me warm because your girl here cannot make a fire to save her life. Even if I happened to be somewhere that isn’t cold, a blanket is something I would still want because it is a comfort item. Just imagine that you’re stuck somewhere unknown, you’re scared, what is the one thing that would probably make you feel a little bit okay? A blanket. They say that a blanket is a great way to make yourself feel safe. Y’all know when your sleeping and you wrap yourself up like a burrito? Or when you were a kid and your parents tucked you as a kid? Well, that’s said to be very good way to make you feel safe. Personally, I know that when I’m feeling super anxious (which more than likely would happen if I’m stuck on an island alone), wrapping myself up in the blanket really helps to calm me down. So I would want a blanket.
  2. A seed. Fun fact: I don’t have a green thumb, BUT if I was stranded on an island, I will figure it out. The reason I would want a seed is because hopefully, I could get it grow food, food that I know and can actually eat until I can figure out what the heck to do. Things like sticks and leaves and dirt will obviously already be on this island, so I wouldn’t be worried about having something to start a fire with or build a shelter with (not that I know how to do either regardless). So the next concern would be what the heck am I going to eat? Because obviously I’m probably not going to know what half the fruits are on this island and the chances of me killing something to eat are very unlikely. So maybe in some crazy world, I would have like an apple with apple seeds or even like some strawberry seeds. Although you’d have to have an awful lot of seeds to make that works, but still. So a seed of some sort that I would be able to use to gain some sort of food.
  3. A book. Sounds almost as far fetch as having a phone or a computer but here me out. Books are good for a few things, the obvious one being that it would be good to keep you occupied till you’re rescued. But there is another reason I would like to have a book, now before I say this let me make this clear that I don’t know the exact science behind this, but okay so books are printed with ink on the pages and the pages, while yes they are paper, but they are a different type of paper. So it’s been said that if you need to keep warm, and you can start a fire, to keep a fire going you can use book pages BUT you can also use this to send a smoke signal! Yes, you heard that right! So ink burns like everything else but it is known to release more smoke and could be used as a smoke single! So you’d hopefully get rescued!

So there you go! I know this is a different type of post but I personally really love this idea.

Not only does it get me thinking but I’m hoping that y’all will give this a chance!

What would you like to have on you if you were on a deserted island?

  • Interesting to think about…

Yes! Just the idea is super complex!

A seed is a really smart idea! I never heard that before. I would take while before seeing crops. Does a package of seeds count? Haha. Great read.

I would think so! That is true, it would probably take a while for anything to grow, so… I’m not sure. Hmmmm.

Yesss a book is a must haha! I remember having to write about this topic in grade school. Lots of fun 🙂 haha

    • Megan Anne ❄️

Yes, I remember writing these in school as well but the answer were never very deep. That’s one reason why I’m very happy that I thought to write it now!

  • You have a very practical list! I’d want a blanket for sure.

I defiantly wanted to go for practicality with this one, maybe in the future, I will do one that is a little more fun! 😉

What a cute idea for a blog post. I’d definitely have to think long and hard about what I’d want to have with me. Especially when you consider what you would need for short and long term survival.

I’m not sure what I’d want on a desert island…a blanket would probably be a good shout though – I get cold really easily. Probably a knife too…
